Without doubt the number one thing to consider when decorating a child's bedroom is how quickly they grow up. What seems like a great idea when they are toddlers can very quickly become a bad one when they're five, six, ten or fourteen years old. For example painting enormous preschool characters on a child's bedroom wall such as Bob the Builder or Dora the Explorer may look good and they may love it; however you're going to find yourself redecorating as soon as they grow out of it.
The key thing to remember is to keep it simple and to try to decorate with decoration that is easy to apply and remove.
Giant Bean Bag
Another good Idea to keep in mind if you do plan on painting (or you just can't resist painting a giant mural) is to only paint one wall with your chosen theme; this makes it very easy to redecorate should the opportunity arise in the future. Paint is often a really good choice for a child's bedroom and whilst magnolia may not be the most inspiring colour with children it does give you a good blank canvas and it's cheap and easy to apply. One thing to remember when you do choose paint though is that it's recommended you choose a hardwearing and washable paint. This is because sticky fingers and other things such as crayons and pens can really take their toll on cheap paints and make your hard work look shabby in no time at all; leaving you left to redecorate, again and again.
Our two year old toddler was a massive fan of Winnie the Pooh and is now currently obsessed with the 'In the Night Garden' series and 'Dora the Explorer'. We have found ourselves having to redecorate already. Fortunately we were clever in the aspect that we thought ahead.
A Winnie the Pooh character themed bedroom was originally the nursery and this was decorated with what I like to think of as props; a Winnie the Pooh lamp shade, Winnie the Pooh and Friends soft toys, Winnie the Pooh fleece blanket, and Winnie the Pooh wall stickers mounted on a simple magnolia painted wall. This gave us a blank canvas to work with; the wall stickers provided the emphasis for the decoration and were without doubt the most valuable addition. The stickers are so easy to apply, they don't leave marks on the wall and they're very easy to remove.
When you keep all of the above ideas in mind it becomes very simple to change the decoration in a child's bedroom without much effort at all. Replace all the props, the duvet cover or fleece, the lampshade, the wall stickers and hey presto you have a new character themed bedroom.
